The malignant (harmful) nature of cancers distinguishes them from harmless tumors since they are uncontrolled, and do not invade or spread to other areas. The branch of medicine concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of cancer is called oncology. Cancers are usually caused by abnormalities in the genetic material of transformed cells.
